Exploring Water Science

In the world of water testing, accurate analysis begins with careful sampling and preservation. Getting in situ measurements and understanding water's properties depends on precise sampling, leading to informed choices.

MPL is NATA Accredited for testing and analysing different water types, including drinking, process, ground, surface, and wastewater.

Navigating the Waters of Sampling and Testing

When it comes to water testing, guidelines like AS/NZS 5667 and resources such as the American Public Health Association's 'Standard Methods for the examination of water and wastewater' provide the path. A crucial principle to remember is that refrigerated samples are vital for maintaining accuracy. Delivering samples to the lab within 24 hours of collection ensures their integrity.

Demystifying PFAS

In the world of environmental monitoring, PFAS has emerged as a significant concern. These compounds, like Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), belong to the perfluorinated family.

While once celebrated for their industrial applications and use in firefighting Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF), PFAS now face growing worry. The residue of their extensive use has led to notable contamination. Their ability to move easily in water bodies spreads them widely, leaving traces even in unexpected places.

Unveiling the Persistence of PFAS

PFAS are proving to be stubborn in their refusal to break down easily. They stick around, showing up in municipal waters, drinking wells, calm surface waters, and groundwater. These puzzling compounds also make their way into soil, sediment, and even the air, a sign of their interaction with products and industries.

Discovering PFAS Testing at MPL

At MPL, we're here to demystify PFAS testing. Our approach combines liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MSMS), allowing us to uncover PFAS secrets in various samples like water, soil, blood/serum, and biota. We're also gearing up for air testing, following international standards.

Our expertise in scientific PFAS testing comes from years of experience, and our advanced facilities support our work. We've made strides with the Total Oxidisable Precursor Assay (TOPA), which helps us identify precursor PFAS compounds – the building blocks of persistent substances like PFOS, PFHxS, and PFOA.

Exploring Microbial Realms

Diving into the world of microorganisms reveals a landscape where bacteria, including harmful types, play a significant role in health, especially when it comes to drinking water. In this dynamic environment, ensuring safe and pure drinking water becomes a top priority.

Understanding Water Contamination

It's intriguing to see how human and animal waste become sources of harmful pathogens in water ecosystems. This happens in peaceful rivers and lakes, busy runoffs, and even seemingly harmless swimming pools. The connections extend to septic tanks, sewage treatment, and nature's role, all contributing to water contamination.

Balancing Nature's Nutrients

In the intricate weave of nature, nutrients are crucial for nourishing plant growth and maintaining stability. However, it’s essential to strike a delicate balance. High nutrient levels in water can upset ecosystems. Overgrowth of algae and aquatic plants can lead to a chain reaction that affects the entire biological community. This shift can alter acidity and oxygen levels, leading to unintended harm to fish and marine life.

A Complicated Connection

The effects go beyond just nature, touching human health and agriculture. An interconnected relationship emerges between nutrient-rich leftovers from fertilizers and the water we use. Excess nitrates and phosphates, carried by water flow, can contaminate the very source we rely on for drinking water.

Exploring Nutrient Balance with MPL

At MPL, our NATA Accredited expertise shines as we delve into the world of nutrients within water samples. Our scientific offerings encompass a range of laboratory tests:

Various Nitrogen Forms

  • Ammonia
  • Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN)

General Guides to Water Sampling

Sampling methods for microbiological examination of water samples

Taking the water sample

A 500mL sample in a sterilised bottle is required for this analysis (sterilised plastic bottles are provided by the laboratory on request).

Samples should be taken at the supply and at various taps in the distribution system system (see included sampling techniques). All samples must be chilled to 4°C, except those to be analysed for Amoeba, and should arrive within 24 hours of collection. Label each bottle with the location, date and time.

Please note:
1. Do not rinse the sample bottle prior to sampling.
2. The cap of the bottle should not be placed lid down at any point neither should fingers come into contact with the underside of the lid.
3. It is helpful to leave a small air space in the bottle to facilitate mixing by shaking before examination.

If collecting a water sample yourself, the accompanying instructions are generalised and provide minimum precautions. Different methods may additionally apply based on your requirements. That’s why we strongly recommend before getting started, you do drop us a line or call us during business hours to ensure that sampling equipment, preservatives, and procedures for sample collection are acceptable.

1 Taps

When sampling from a tap open fully and let water run to waste for 2-3 minutes or for a time sufficient to permit clearing of the service line. Reduce the flow to permit filling the bottle without splashing.

If tap cleanliness is questionable apply a solution of Sodium Hypochlorite (5mL bleach + 1 cup water) or a flame to the faucet before sampling. Run water for an additional 2-3 minutes after treatment.

If sampling from a hot/cold tap, run hot water for 2 minutes then cold water for 2-3 minutes and collect samples as above.

2  Reservoirs (eg: tanks, swimming pools, cooling towers, etc)

Hold the closed bottle near its base and plunge it below the surface.

Remove the cap and turn thebottle until Its neck points slightly upward and mouth is directed toward the current. If there is no current, create one by pushing the bottle forward away from the body.

Replace the cap while the bottle is still below the surface.

Sampling methods for chemical analysis of water samples

Taking the water sample

Correct sampling, storage and transportation are critical to the accuracy of analysis. Samples should be collected carefully to make sure the most representative sample possible is obtained—well mixed flowing water where possible. Use only clean containers for collecting samples, these are provided free of charge with analysis and can be picked up from MPL Laboratories.

General and potable water and inorganic analysis

Samples for drinking water supplies should ideally be taken at both the source of supply and at a tap commonly
used. The water should be allowed to run for several minutes to flush the system and the sample container should be flushed with water before collecting the sample.

Water samples from wells/bores should be collected after the pump has run long enough to deliver water representative of ground water; this will avoid collection of stagnant water.

Plastic bottles are normally sufficient for this type of sampling. A 500mL sample is required which should be filled to the top to exclude air, forwarded for analysis within 24 hours and kept cool if possible.
