Acid Sulfate Soils

Acid Sulfate Soil Testing

Acid sulfate soils are an intricate world, where the natural presence of iron sulfides, particularly "pyrite," holds a hidden potential. When exposed to oxygen, these unassuming compounds can generate sulfuric acid, a potent agent that can infiltrate its surroundings. The consequences are profound, ranging from potential infrastructure deterioration to the leaching of iron, aluminium, and heavy metals into local water systems. The ripple effect extends to socio-economic and environmental realms, unleashing both short-term and enduring impacts.

Unveiling MPL's Expertise

In our Perth laboratory, MPL Laboratories proudly holds NATA Accreditation for an array of specialized tests. The SPOCAS suite (Suspension Peroxide Oxidation Combined Acidity and Sulphur), Chromium suite, and Chip Tray method (pHF/pHOX and pHINC) collectively offer a comprehensive view. These tests identify both the 'acid' and 'sulphur' trails, enabling insightful comparisons against guideline values. We also extend our capability to include Acid Volatile Sulphur (AVS) analysis and field tests. Tailored suites for water analysis in acid sulfate soil terrains complement our offerings.

Turnaround Time

We are committed to flexible offerings, depending on your project requirements. We have a standard 5 working day Turnaround Time (TAT) for SPOCAS, Chromium suite and their subset of tests. However, expedited results can be provided for an additional fee, with a TAT as swift as 3 working days, depending on the nature of the sample.

Sampling

The sampling protocol for acid sulfate soil samples is paramount. To minimize air contact, gather a minimum of 200g within zip-lock bags. Remove any larger shells, wood, charcoal, and stones from the sample. However, leave biological remnants like roots untouched. Samples should be kept cool in the field, ensuring they reach our laboratory within 24 hours. In cases where immediate delivery isn't feasible, swift action can be taken through freezing or controlled drying at 85°C, followed by storage in zip lock bags. This will extend the holding time of the sample by reducing any further oxidation.
